How we verify

How we verify

Every sentence on AND India rests on a claim, and every claim on a passage in a document we have archived. Nothing is written from memory. An editor approves every story before it is published.

WHAT THE LABELS MEAN
VerifiedA document from the body with authority over the matter says it, and we have archived it.
ReportedIndependent news organisations state it plainly; no official document yet.
StatementSomeone said this. We confirm it was said, not that it is true.
DisputedSources with standing give incompatible accounts. Both are shown.
UnverifiedNot yet supported by an independent source.
FalseAn official document contradicts a claim in circulation.
WHO CAN VERIFY WHAT

A body verifies what is inside its own authority: the Reserve Bank its rates, a ministry its decisions, a court its orders, a party its own members, a company its own results. When someone speaks about someone else, we report it as a statement, attributed, never as fact.

News organisations never make a claim Verified, however many agree. When independent organisations state something plainly and no official document exists yet, we say it is Reported and name them.

WHEN SOURCES DISAGREE

We show both and say who said what. When an official figure is revised, the revision appears in the story’s corrections, not silently in its place.

CORRECTIONS AND WITHDRAWALS

If a source changes after we publish, the story is flagged for an editor. If we get something wrong, the correction is published on the story itself.
